(Posted on 12/26/12)
Last month, the government’s seemingly interminable lawsuit against the tobacco industry appeared to be nearing something resembling an end, as the judge ruled that cigarette makers must publish apologies for their deception in ads and on packaging. What’s still undecided is whether stores must also post the apology.

Cigarette Legislation Criticised (Posted on 12/20/12) Plans to ban menthol cigarettes and require anti-smoking warnings to cover 75% of cigarette packets have been criticised by local MEP Paul Nuttall.

"Those who think it will deter smokers need to think again," said Mr Nuttall, UKIP Deputy Leader.

"Research shows that ironically plain packaging is more likely to lead to more tobacco consumption to cheap cigarettes.

Fewer Teens Buy Cigarettes When Displays Are Hidden (Posted on 12/06/12) Teenagers are less likely to buy cigarettes if they are not displayed in plain sight behind shop counters, according to a new study published in the journal Pediatrics.

Although all tobacco advertising, including most in-store display ads, are banned in South Africa, cigarette advertising at the point-of-sale is common in many convenience stores in the country.

“We know the retail environment is a very important place for tobacco companies to advertise and market their products," said the lead researcher, Dr Annice Kim in a Reuters Health report.

Any teens that asked the cashier for cigarettes online were denied because of age - but what the researchers were interested in was how many asked.

Should smokers need a license to buy cigarettes? (Posted on 11/25/12) A proposal for a smoker's licensing scheme has been proposed in an article in the journal PLoS Medicine. The scheme would be designed to work with smokers to limit their access to tobacco products such as cigarettes, cigars and rolling tobacco as well as encouraging people to quit and providing a financial incentive for those who do.

"A smoker's licence allows smokers the choice to continue smoking within a regulatory framework that promises new disincentives to smoke and a major financial incentive to quit." says Professor Simon Chapman of the School of Public Health, University of Sydney in Australia. Professor Chapman is also a director of Action on Smoking and Health, Australia and editor emeritus of Tobacco Control.

Should Cigarettes Cost More? (Posted on 11/21/12) A recent article in the Harvard Business Review posited that a pack of cigarettes should cost $25 to make up for the resulting healthcare costs caused by smoking. What do you think?

Henry David Thoreau said, "There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root." We have hacked at healthcare costs for what seems like thousands of times, with very limited success. It is time to strike at the root. Rather than focus on reducing costs after preventable diseases have taken hold, it is time to focus attention on eliminating the disease.
